  What I found, what each change should save you over time, and a list of ways I can help from there. Some of it you can do yourself. The rest I quote job by job, or run end to end for you.

Sometimes the answer is no.

I sell nothing and install nothing, so there is nothing I need you to buy. That means I can say what an installer can’t.

At one house, I told them not to buy the battery yet, to keep the boiler until it gives up, and not to replace the pool heater, because theirs is fine. What saved them money instead was three changes that cost nothing, worth ~$910 a year.

• What’s the difference between the $349 and the $599?

  At $349 you get the visit, the plan, and a review of any quotes you’re holding. At $599, I go further: I analyse how you actually use power, switch you to the best plans myself, write the longer report, and come back a year later to see whether the savings landed.

• Why do you charge for the visit?

  Because the visit is where the findings are. I read your bills before I arrive, but a bill only tells you what you used. It can’t tell you that your EV charger was miswired, your timers aren't set up, or that a badly sealed roof penetration is about to drip onto the inverter below it.

• Is a battery actually worth it?

  Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Nobody pays me a commission, so I can afford to tell you either way.

• I’ve got solar and the bill never moved.

  Usually the energy plan, a timer, or an inverter nobody set up properly. The saving normally comes from changing settings and plans, rather than from buying something new.

• How would I know the install was done right?

  On your own it’s hard to tell. Passing inspection is the bar, and mistakes still get through it. I inspect what went in, and at $599 I look at the bills again a year later to see whether the savings turned up.

• Isn’t there a free council program for this?

  Yes, and it’s good. Geelong Sustainability’s Electric Homes Program is a directory of vetted installers plus workshops. However, it isn’t a plan for your house, a review of the quotes in your inbox, or someone checking the job was done right.

• What happens after the consult?

  You get it in writing: what I’d change, in what order, and what each change should save you over time. If you’d rather not deal with installers, I can run the whole job, from reviewing quotes to making sure it’s all working as planned after the final inspection.

• Is this a green thing?

  Yes. Your house ends up running on more clean power, and that’s a good thing. It also ends up cheaper to run, which is what most people ring me about first.
